Remarks:
The distinguished Joel Stone House sits prominently on the Washington Green in the Historic District. It was built by Tory sympathizer, Joel Stone, a prosperous local merchant. Carefully updated to retain all the original detail, the house is a marvelous blend of 18th-century charm and 21st-century convenience, including a superb kitchen and stylish bathrooms.
It is, arguably, the finest 18th-century house in Washington; its original floor plan is intact, and the fine woodworking includes a rare built-in corner cupboard and extensive paneling. A colonial stone fireplace with bake oven is the focal point of the updated kitchen/great room. Upstairs, one room has frescoed walls dating to the 1790s and the master bedroom, which looks across the Green, has exceptional paneling and a fireplace. The third floor has two more bedrooms and bath, perfect for guests.
The new oversized garage addition has a paneled 3-story elevator, a first-floor guest suite, and on the second floor, a studio and laundry room. New paint, wiring, and plumbing, new baths and kitchen; full-height, clean, dry basement. 3,800 sq. ft., 5 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, and a separate carriage house. A lovely garden graces the private and quiet rear lawn.
This is in-town living at its best – within walking distance of the Post Office and Library. Walking trails are easily accessible in the nearby Steep Rock Reservation, or simply enjoy strolling around the back roads off the lovely historic Green.
